Chess in Our Schools
The Eastern Sierra Chess Club promotes chess in local schools as an educational, inclusive, and engaging activity for students of all ages. Our scholastic programs are designed to support both beginners and experienced players, providing a positive environment where students can learn, practice, and grow.
We work with schools, teachers, and families to bring chess clubs, instruction, and events to students throughout the Eastern Sierra region.
School Chess Clubs
We currently have two school chess clubs.
The Colts Chess Club at Home Street Middle School, BUSD. This club has been active for five years with 10-15 student members. The club meets Wednesdays at school lunchtime and has sponsored an annual spring tournament.
The Bronco Chess Club at Bishop Union High School, BUSD. This club just started in January 2026 after students returned from holiday break. The club meets Tuesdays at lunchtime in the facult advisor's room (Mr. Launspach).
Why Chess in Schools?
Chess is more than a game — it is a powerful learning tool that supports academic and personal development.
Students who play chess develop:
● Critical thinking and problem-solving skills
● Concentration and focus
● Patience and perseverance
● Planning and decision-making abilities
● Sportsmanship and respect for others
Chess encourages students to think ahead, learn from mistakes, and approach challenges thoughtfully — skills that translate directly to the classroom and beyond.
An Inclusive Activity for All Students
Chess is accessible to students of all backgrounds and ability levels. No prior experience is required, and students can participate at their own pace.
Our scholastic programs emphasize:
● A welcoming, supportive environment
● Learning through play and practice
● Confidence-building for beginners
● Friendly competition for advanced players
Chess allows students to succeed through effort and creativity, not physical ability.
What We Offer

● School chess clubs
